Smash…

It helped to throw things: his graduation certificate, an empty coffee cup, his cell phone. One by one they crashed into the wall of his office. Luke knew the others probably thought he was insane for the way he was reacting. He didn’t give a fuck.

Corbin. How the hell could he? How could he look Luke in the eye and lie like that, tell him he was in love, tell him they were forever?

Actually he’d never said that, Luke reasoned. He sure as fucking hell had implied it, though. Implied they had a real chance to be something, Luke’s first real chance ever. He had to get angry, had to throw things. If he didn’t, nothing would stop the hurt from ripping through him, tearing little pieces out of his skin and belly and muscles until he was a bleeding mass dissolved on the floor. So he threw the vase that held the dahlias he and Corbin had picked out at the market only two days ago, and the framed photograph of his parents, and the cup that held his pens.

Smash, smash, smash.

He felt better for a moment. Until he thought of Corbin again, and it all went back to shit.

His desk phone rang. Luke didn’t want to pick it up, but he was at work. He couldn’t avoid reality. “What?” he barked.

“I need you in my office.” Waterman.

Well, at least someone was going to be happy. They had gotten their guy. NW2 was caught. Too bad Luke’s entire life had come crashing down with it. He doubted Waterman cared.

“What is it, Waterman?” Luke asked when he got to his boss’ office.

He hadn’t used that tone before, not with someone he was truthfully a little afraid of. But apparently the time had come for Luke to snap. He didn’t give a shit about his job. He didn’t give a shit about anything. He needed to throw something else very, very soon.

“You might want to check your tone with me, young man.” Waterman gave him a long look, then dismissed his irritation. “We have NW2 in custody. Scotland Yard released him to us, and we’re going to have to decide who to turn him in to. The list is long. He’s wanted in multiple countries.”

They had Corbin. They had—

“Why is he here?” Luke didn’t understand. There had been blood. So much blood.

Waterman made a face. “He’s been cleared of the murder. He’s ours to deal with.”

“Cleared. He... he didn’t?” Luke was stunned into silence after that. Corbin hadn’t killed Hughes. He had stolen, over and over and over, and lied to Luke about everything, but at least he wasn’t a killer. Luke felt like throwing up.

“He wasn’t anywhere near Hughes’s house during the window the ME gave for the shooting. He did, however, attempt to steal a rather large diamond from Lord Hughes and he had two very interesting items in his bag. I’m sure you already know the rest. We’re going to have to figure out what to do with him.
